Video is a great way to find a provocation for different writing forms. Instructional writing is one form that can be staid and dry. I know that I am more engaged when there is an element of entertainment to it. Like this “How to Pet a Kitty” from theoatmeal.com. Some airlines have been doing the same thing with their safety video. Witness Air New Zealand:
They take something that people normally tune out, and breathe life into it. Students can take these ideas and run with them.
- Procedural Writing
- Informational Writing
- Examining Parody
- Speaking/writing in voice
Oh, wait, they ARE taking the hobbits to Isengard! (Be warned, this is very earwormy!)
